Canoeing

The Real Adventure Company offers Canoe based adventures for all ages and abilities. Whether it be a dawn or dusk explore of the upper reaches of the Cleddau, a casual full day of Canoe exploration, or a multiday Canoeing adventure, we’ve got something for you. You also have the option to mix it up and try a bit of Canoeing as part of a multi activity weekend.

We will give you all the skills you need to get out and enjoy Canoeing and explore the stunning Pembrokeshire Waterways.

Our Canoe explorer trips provide you with an opportunity to discover and explore some of Pembrokeshire’s lesser known inland waterways.

The nature of your day is up to you, if you want to just get out there into some amazing wild places and start exploring, we can do that… We run guided trips on the river Tiefi and the upper reaches of the Cleddau Estuary.

We also run multi day skills based courses, teaching you the elegance and panache of solo and tandem paddling, mixed in with some exploration of wild places. So if you are wanting to get serious about this sport, this would be a good option for you.

By arrangement we can organise and lead mini expeditions for groups at locations like the river Wye.

It’s difficult to get into a Canoe without getting all Bear Grylls, so we always take the Kelly Kettles with us, just in case we decide to land and make camp.

Canoeing with The Real Adventure Company

Why choose Pembrokeshire for Canoeing?

Pembrokeshire is world famous for its incredibly diverse and stunning coastline… its inland water ways are equally as impressive and stooped with wildlife and local history.

Tidal estuaries, meandering rivers and some faster moving white water… Pembrokeshire has it all.

The elegant and majestic nature of the traditional open canoe fits in with this natural environment perfectly.

The upper reaches of the Cleddau Estuary offer a truly magical experience, as the head of the tide pushes up to the harder to reach areas such as Carew Castle, Slebech Park and on to Blackpool Mill. The bigger tides tend to be first thing in the morning or later in the evenings, being out on the water at these times of day feels really special and the morning and dusk light just adds to the mystical feel of the already amazing locations.
Our Canoe explorer trips out are a fantastic experience of discovery, finding some of Pembrokeshire’s beautiful hidden secrets

What type of Canoes do we use?

At The Real Adventure Company, we have a mixed fleet of Canoes, including Venture Prospectors and Old Town Discoveries. These boats range between 15 and 17ft in length and have either 2 or 3 seats in each boat. These boats offer plenty of room for a few creature comforts to be taken along for the day.

With young families and groups, we often raft 2 Canoes together to make a super stable platform which helps to keep young family members close and feeling confident.

Un-rafted these boats can either be paddled in tandem or as solo craft, becoming very responsive and graceful as they glide through the water.

What do we wear while Canoeing?

This depends on what sort of Canoeing we are doing, most of the time Canoeing is a dry activity, so no wetsuits required. We provide you with all the essential equipment needed, some for safety some for comfort. This includes, a Buoyancy aid, a helmet, a waterproof paddle jacket and trousers also gloves and socks for winter paddling. We will also provide you with some dry storage bags for your personal stuff for the day.

A lot of the time shorts and T-shirts are enough, though we recommend you bring leggings or trackie bottoms and a warm top just in case. Denim jeans are never a good idea if there’s a chance of getting wet, even from rain showers or being splashed.

It is very likely that you will get your feet wet, so bring foot wear that you don’t mind getting wet.

Where do we go?

The open Canoe is designed and intended for exploring inland waterways, though can be used on the sea when the conditions allow.

Pembrokeshire offers a good choice of hidden inland waters to explore, we often head for the upper reaches of the Cleddau Estuary around Picton Point up to Black Tar Mill, or from the small river village of Langwm up to the old county town of Haverfordwest, or maybe even an evening trip up to Carew Castle. This whole area feels completely timeless and is hugely significant in Pembrokeshire and Welsh history.

The other piece of water we frequent just a bit to the north of us is the River Teifi. Offering a stunning day out following the meandering river on its journey though ancient wooded gouges to meet the sea in Cardigan.
